Laser cutting machines allow complex cutting operations to be done quickly, cleanly and precisely. Using a power of 1,000 to 2,000 watts, the laser beam generally impacts the cutting surface at a width of 0.2 mm (0.008 in). The easiest materials to work with are carbon steel and stainless steel. Other materials, such as copper or aluminum, can also be worked, but will need wattage in the higher range.
Electronic data from a CAD drawing can produce complex shapes on flat materials. When you have three axes in play, there is almost no limit on what you can do. The minimum size hole you can cut in stock can be as low as 20 percent of the stock thickness. One great economy in using laser cutters is the nearly complete absence of burrs, thus removing the need for a deburring process.
Laser cutting systems are much easier to use than die systems. They take up far less room and can be changed easily by switching programs. There is less likelihood of warping because the area heated is so small. There is no cutting edge to dull, so maintenance is simple. Finally, lasers are environmentally friendly.
